Girl & Guy Thing educates, inspires

The Girl Thing will be hosting Girls Night Out 2015 tonight from 6–10 p.m. at WHS. GNO 2015 is an evening retreat featuring the reading of senior girls’ anonymous letters about their high school experiences, according to Health Teacher and Girl/Guy Thing Coordinator Ms. Susan Kolesar.

According to Dana Seigelstein, a senior Girl Thing facilitator, this event is going to feel like a slumber party, with pajamas, dinner, dessert and bonding while still having the positive learning effect of the other Girl Thing events.

Seigelstein said, “This is something that we are doing for the first time, and I think its going to be a hit.”

Tonight’s first-ever GNO 2015 serves as a culmination of this week’s girl thing sessions. According to the program’s flyer, the week of events included “Off da’ Hook,” a discussion of hook- up culture; “Under The Um- brella: LGBT Q&A,” a discussion of sexual identity; and “What I Wish I Knew Then,” readings of letters in which seniors shared their advice and experiences with freshmen.

Said junior Samantha Gargiulo: “Going to the Girl Thing my freshman year helped me feel connected to the community of girls at this high school, especially the upperclassmen.”

This week also marked the return of The Guy Thing. According to a Guy Thing flyer, sessions included “Pumping Iron,” a workout safety class with Athletic Trainer Mr. Chris Flores; “Tough Stuff,” in which senior guys shared stories of their hardships; “Steppin’ Up,” which focused on dealing with peer pressure; and lastly, “Q&A with a Cop,” in which School Resource Officer Jeffrey Johnson and the senior facilitators discussed students’ rights and laws pertaining to parties, driving, drugs and alcohol. Kolesar said in a press release: “[These programs] give [students] a voice. It gives their experiences, often painful ones, a chance to help someone else.”
