Driving safety explored

The Share the Keys event was held in the auditorium last Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. to promote awareness of the Graduated Driver’s License among new drivers. The event was created in hopes of emphasizing the importance of practicing driving, enforcing the rules of the GDL and controlling the keys.

Brought to WHS by Coordinator of Physical Education Ms. Beverly Torok last year, Share the Keys helps to supplement Driver’s Theory and to inform parents.

Said sophomore Bella Wright, “The event was well organized and exactly what both myself and my mother needed to be able to get through this new and scary experience together.”

Said Torok, “It’s a package deal with parent and student involvement…. It is a team [effort] to getting their teen to drive safer.”

Wright said: “My mother learned…that all the things I have seen her do in her car throughout my life…will influence me because I look up to her as a teacher.”

According to Torok, positive feedback from both students and parents last year helped to bring the program back. Tuesday’s event consisted of a presentation of the GDL. The event provided interactive ways to get both students and parents involved with a contract and what-would-you-do scenarios, and ended with prize giveaways.

Wright said, “The event made me realize I am not the only one who is scared to start driving.” She said that she plans to practice driving in all conditions in order to maximize safety.

Added Torok, “I think this really engages conversation and enlightens the parents of standards they need to set keep their teens safe.”
