Election recap

by Elena Arida

Mr. Andy Skibitsky was elected mayor of Westfield for his third term on Nov. 5. After this term, Skibitsky will be the longest standing mayor in the town’s history.

He campaigned against Democrat Dave Haas, a member of the Westfield Town Council. Skibitsky received 5,290 votes while Haas received 4,257, according to the Westfield Town Clerk Office.

First Ward Councilman Sam Della Fera and Second Ward Councilwoman Vicki Kimmins ran unopposed and were re-elected to the Town Council.

In addition, Republican David Olivera was elected as the Third Ward Councilman and Keith Loughlin was re-elected as the Fourth Ward Councilman.

Ms. Ginny Leiz, Mr. Brendan Galligan and Mr. Mitchell Slater were all re-elected as members of the Westfield BOE.

Westfield residents also voted in favor of the bond referendum that will grant $2.7 million in state grants to be applied towards the remaining $6.7 million of the roof project. This state grant will alleviate part of the cost that would otherwise come from Westfield taxes, according to BOE Vice President Ms. Rosanne Kurstedt in a letter in the last Hi’s Eye issue.
