Finding deals at local thrift stores

by Courtney Han

Do you want to pop some tags, but don’t know where to start? Here are a few thrift stores that will get you looking frosty for $20 or less!

Unique, located on Route 22 in Watchung, is the department store of thrift shops. Shoppers can find anything from t-shirts to teapots at a decent price, but be prepared to spend a lot of time because there’s plenty to look through. With $20 in my pocket, my goal was to find a new outfit for school—jeans, shirt and jacket. I found a pair of $10 jeans from Lucky Brand—a bargain! I also purchased a $6 t-shirt from the Gap, leaving me with $4. With the money I had left I wouldn’t be able to buy a jacket so I decided to look at the jewelry counter, where I found a cute necklace and bracelet for $2 each. The men’s section also had a lot to choose from. Unique has great prices, and on Mondays, everything in the store is 25 percent off.
Hip Thrift is located on South Avenue across from the train station. Like Unique, it has a wide variety of items but on a much smaller scale and in a more appealing display. When I went to Hip Thrift, there were several racks of clothing for less than $5. The $3 Forever 21 dress, $5 men’s J. Crew sweater, $2 leggings and assorted jewelry for $1 each were well within my $20 budget. In addition, I purchased a French art poster for my bedroom from the Hip Thrift art gallery for only $1.
The Westfield Service League Thrift Shop is very convenient because it is located in downtown Westfield. Unlike Unique and Hip Thrift, this thrift shop has mostly clothes and only a few houseware items. When I went to WSL thrift shop there was a sale on top of already low prices. Everything was 50 percent off—I bought a leather backpack for $3, American Apparel mittens and a Banana Republic sweater for $2 each, sunglasses for $1 and books for 50 cents each with plenty of money to spare. Overall, the WSL thrift shop has great sales but a small selection.
