As Halloween rapidly approaches, FX has begun the terrifying fourth season of its anthology series American Horror Story: Freak Show. With a captivating plot, graphic scenes and award-winning actors, the original horror series is off to a strong start.
From the outset, Freak Show captures the attention of its audience with a unique plot that examines the struggles of carnival performers to survive in the dying world of freak shows. In keeping with the archetype of the demonic clown, the creators introduce Twisty, a mutant clown who wreaks havoc by indiscriminately preying upon the residents of 1952 Jupiter, FL.
It is no surprise that Freak Show is living up to the expectations of the previous award-winning seasons, with the reappearance of multiple Academy Award winners including Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett. Each embraces her own unique deformity, taking on her role with authenticity.
Most importantly, the creators are not afraid to give viewers what they are looking for. Clearly for mature audiences, Freak Show uses strong language, sexual situations, violence and nudity to shock its viewers. For example, the evil clown uses his juggling pins as blunt force weapons to beat and disable his victims.
The cinematography and music also contribute to the haunting atmosphere of the show. With visuals that linger, camera angles constantly shifting and the recurring Freak Show theme song playing in the background, viewers are left in terrifying suspense.
Based on upcoming attractions and the first few episodes, viewers should be prepared for some freaky moments. If the remainder of the season continues to build in intensity, FX will have another hit. Upcoming episodes are scheduled on Wednesdays at 10 p.m.
