Girls Track Races at Racine

​On the crisp winter morning of Dec. 28, the girls winter track team assembled to compete in the Racine Invitational at Drew University, in Madison.
The meet was short and filled with excellent competition. Twenty-three teams from schools across the state were represented.Said Head Coach Jennifer Buccino, “We are making progress and filling events that were left open because of graduation.”
Senior Tri-Captain Kaitlyn Johnson placed sixth in the 800 meter race with a personal record of 2:28.77. In the same race, senior Amanda Marcotullio placed twelfth.
The relay team of seniors Marcotullio, Johnson, Sophia DeVita and Tri-Captain Eileen Cook placed sixth in the 1600 meter relay with a time of 4:36.
Cook said, “We are excited about a lot of our relay teams, especially with the county relays coming up.”
“We had a few personal records in the distance medley relay and many people who met their personal records,” said Johnson.
In the sprint medley relay, seniors Kelly Biglin and Katherine Fox, junior Veronica Murphy and freshman Rita Murphy placed eleventh. Biglin, Veronica Murphy and Fox all set personal records.
In the 1600 meter, junior Leigh Heinbokel placed twelfth with a personal record of 6:06.24.
Said Buccino, “As the season continues, our goals are to continue to improve individually, develop the underclassmen for the future and have strong performances in the county and state level meets.”
Johnson said, “Everyone got to do two or more events, so everyone there got a good workout to prepare for the bigger meets coming up.”
The team will be competing in the Union County Relays tonight at 5 p.m. at the Jersey City Armory.
Said Buccino: “We have spring season veterans that are out there for the first time in the winter that are helping to fill spots. We are also working to develop the freshmen and rookies.”
