In light of the Nov. 20 Florida State University school shooting, Hi’s Eye must recognize the tragedy of yet another act of school violence, and the frightening reality of this deep-rooted history in our society. Again and again, we find ourselves facing the same atrocities, and calling for the same changes. In order to recognize these tragedies, Hi’s Eye has looked back to remember their staffers’ discussions of school shootings in the past. From Columbine to today, our staff sincerely hopes we never need to repeat these tragic words.

Hi’s Eye Staff April 23, 1999, on Columbine
“As the nation recovers from the most recent high school massacre, parents, students, teachers, and administrators alike are once more faced with the startling reality that instances like these are no longer somebody else’s problem. Every community has members who feel alienated.”

Letter from Mr. Principal Robert G. Petix April 30, 1999, on Columbine
“We at Westfield High School must take the events at Littleton seriously and respond effectively to improve our school community. Our response, however, must not in any way compromise those values that promote trust and mutual respect.”

Hi’s Eye staff April 27, 2007, on VA tech massacre
“To watch these videos is to give Cho exactly what he wanted: and audience to hear an empty explanation of his actions. Although NBC made the package available for everyone to view, it doesn’t mean the public must follow suit.”

“Guns, whether they are kept for entertainment, for protection or to harm others, inherently change the atmosphere. Imagine a school or a community in which people walk around with hand guns in their back pockets. There is heightened tension and above that heightened fear.” – Ayn Wisler

Elena Arida Dec 12, 2013, on Newtown
“Take the time to reflect on the Newtown shooting and remember the 26 victims from Sandy Hook Elementary School. We cannot control how often we are forced to endure mass tragedies, but we can make sure that the victims are never forgotten by taking the time to reflect.”

Sabrina Ladj Oct 31, 2014, on Marysville-Pilchuck, WA
“After every tragedy, Americans come together and vow to make a change. We righteously scream from the rooftops that is imminent to protect innocent children as they make their way through school days from those whom wish to cause them unimaginable harm. However, as time goes by, the deaths and injuries of those wounded from the immense gun violence fades away and with it any hope of drastic change.”
