Kids in a candy store

by Hailey Nettler & Zoë Rader
Amidst the chaotic hustle and bustle of Times Square, there is an entire world of sugar comas and chocolatey goodness. M&M’S World, which opened in 2006, is a popular tourist destination for anyone with a sweet tooth.
As you step through the doors to this alternate universe, you are faced with a colorful explosion of M&M’S merchandise. The walls are cluttered with bags, clothing, blankets, pillows and more. If you don’t choose to self-serve, the chocolate candies are stuffed in every container imaginable—heart-shaped, circles, dispensers and tubes, to name just a few.
At 10 in the morning, customers are already shuffling in. No matter the time of day, you’ll always find the upbeat floor employees and hear the loud, energetic music.
Shyann, a 19-year-old employee from the Bronx, said: “It’s a really good store, the energy is great. Nobody is ever really negative.” Shyann has been working at M&M’S World for about one week and said her dad encouraged her to interview for the job. “The first time I came here I was very young, 11,” Shyann said. “[It] was around when they first opened and I thought it was mad cool.”
The store also prides itself on the diversity of its customers.
José, an 18-year-old security guard, said the store gets a lot of French, British, Italian, Mexican, Puerto Rican and Dominican customers as well as a lot of people from Transylvania.
Samantha, a 27-year-old customer with a bag full of M&M products, was visiting the city from northern England with her dad. This was her first time visiting M&M’S World.
“The M&M’S here taste different to the ones we have,” she said. “They taste a bit sweeter; they’re more chocolatey. Back home they’re a bit blander.”
The M&M factory is known to surprise its fans with new flavors and this month it is releasing the new caramel M&M.
“I tasted it yesterday. A lot of people kept telling me it tasted like Twix, and I’m like no, no way,” José said. “It tastes good, the aftertaste, but it’s very chewy.”
Although M&M’S World is hoping this new flavor will be a big hit, the classic flavors keep the customers from all over the world filtering in.
“I love M&M’S, they’re my favorite,” Samantha said. “So when I came, I came for myself.”
