Let’s Talk About Prom House

by Rebecca Smoot
What happens at prom house stays at prom house. This has been the approach for most of the conversation surrounding Prom weekend for too many years. For most of the community, the events following prom is a topic we skirt around. Everyone seems to know what goes on in Seaside Heights, but no one really wants to discuss it. Hi’s Eye decided to start that conversation. Here is what the WHS community had to say:
“I hold my breath the whole weekend. I wait for the day that everybody comes back OK. I think that the kids consider it a ‘right’ of passage rather than a ‘rite’ of passage. My response to that is that with every ‘right’ comes responsibility” – Director of Counseling Ms. Maureen Mazzarese

“I wouldn’t say that a lot of underclassmen know what exactly goes on at prom house, so I think that although we have heard a lot about it we need to experience it to really understand what happens.”- Freshman Sean O’Brien

“I have heard that [prom house] has a lot of freedom to do whatever you want. But with that comes a lack of parental control that could lead to the weekend getting out of hand.”- Junior Dana Boretz

“I think it is up to parents, in particular, to be cognizant of who their kids are spending time with and what their expectations are in terms of behavior. And the kids have to exercise a level of maturity. But for me, the school can only say and do so much and that is something I think families and parents have to be in charge of.”- English Teacher Mr. David Della Fera

“I would say to the seniors to be prepared and have the communication ahead of time like ‘I want to go and have fun but I am not looking to hook up.’”- Health Teacher Mr. Kevin Everly

“I am ready for anything that could happen. I know my limits and know not to make a fool of myself so I feel comfortable with myself but can’t say the same for everyone else.” Senior Emily Mordkovich
