Making their mark early: Standout freshman athletes shine

WHS has always been known for having talented freshman athletes, and this fall has been no different. From the hectic environment of a cross country meet to the chaos on the turf field, these three WHS varsity stars live up to their hype.

Chloe Beaulieu
Freshman phenom Chloe Beaulieu took fieldhockey fans’ breath away just three weeks ago during her debut on the varsity team. A freshman on varsity? This is unheard of.
Beaulieu started playing field hockey just two years ago for her club team, and since then has jumped straight to playing with upperclassmen on the varsity and junior varsity teams.
She said her inspiration to start playing was the immense support she received from her family, friends and, of course, her teammates. “The atmosphere [of the team] is incredible,” she said. “Everyone that I have met is not only super nice, but they were also very excited for me when I started playing on varsity.”
Varsity Captain Megan Webber concurred: “I’m so happy to see Beaulieu playing on varsity. She has so much skill and works really well with the rest of the team.”
As of Oct. 3, Beaulieu has one goal and two assists and continues to amaze on the field. See her for yourself this Saturday at Kehler Stadium!
Will McGlynn
Most people wouldn’t believe that you could start running in first grade and never look back in a sport that most consider to be just punishment. Freshman Will McGlynn is that crazy person and has never looked back from day one.
McGlynn was an absolute stud as a runner during his middle school years, competing at the Junior Olympics and being one of the best 3,000-meter runners in the country for his age group. McGlynn said he has always loved the longer distances and he sure is good at them.
It’s unbelievable when a freshman is one of the best performers on any varsity team at WHS, and McGlynn is doing just that. His times prove that he can be a member on the varsity top 7.
McGlynn has already won a race early in his Blue Devil career at the Bernie MaGee Class Meet on Sept. 23. McGlynn won the freshman race with a time of 10:24 over the two-mile course. “I’m here to compete and if that means scoring points for varsity then great,” he said. “I’m just here to run no matter what.”
Caroline Collins
The second part to the fantastic freshman track duo is cross country star Caroline Collins. Collins also competed at the Junior Olympics as a middle schooler, which she said was “an amazing experience.”
Collins also has the potential to be a scoring member on varsity this year because her talent is on the level of some of the top upperclassmen, which is quite impressive.
“I would love to be a scoring member of the varsity team,” Collins said. “I also really like running with all my freshman friends and think our freshman team could be really good this year.”
Collins’ potential has no limit because of how young she is and because she has her whole high school career ahead of her. Collins finished third at the Bernie Magee Class Meet on Sept. 23, leading the freshman team to win this race with a time of 12:13.
You’re going to be hearing the name Caroline Collins for the next few years whenever Blue Devil running is being discussed.
