by Zoe Rader

You’ve seen the posters. You might have even thought about playing. And now, with BOE approval on May 10, you could be anxiously anticipating the start to their first season. But do you know some of the passionate players ready to play on the new girls’ hockey team?

Ally Hornstein- Sophomore Favorite players: Gordie Howe and Bobby Orr Best memory: “When my team had to win a game to get into playoffs and it was 0–0 up until the third [period]. Then I scored a hat trick for my team [and] we won the game and made it to playoffs.” What you love about hockey: “I love how different and fast-paced it is compared to other sports and I love being on ice.”

Maddie McDevitt- RIS Eighth Grader Role models: “I’m excited that this year the [National Women’s Hockey League] was started and female hockey players get a chance to play professionally.” Best Memory: “My U12 girls’ team played in a playoff game against an all-boys’ team and to everyone’s surprise we won in a shootout.” What you love about hockey: “I love playing with my friends and making new ones. I also love the skating part of the sport most.”

Sarah Wasserman- Sophomore Favorite player: Mats Zuccarello Best memory: “Meeting a bunch of really nice girls who share the same passion as me.” What you love about hockey: “Everything. It’s an exciting sport and the fanbase [and] people who play feel like a community.”
