Miller spins into shape

By Claudia Romeo
Some people are going gluten free, some are turning to juice cleanses and others, like Flywheel Student Ambassador senior Mia Miller, are finding more enjoyable ways to stay healthy. Flywheel, a high-intensity, cycling class that can burn up to 800 calories, according to glamour.com.

Each Flywheel class is unique, with different music, instructors and exercises. To keep riders engaged, instructors incorporate a mix of sprint intervals as well as slow climbs to build endurance and muscle
Miller was approached one month ago by Flywheel to become a Student Ambassador. Today, she spreads her passion for the spin class by recruiting new riders.

According to Miller, she loves to motivate others both in and outside of the exercise class, and she encourages them to try their first class with her. She said her love for Flywheel coupled with her positive attitude qualified her for the position.

Miller started Flywheel about a year ago. “I was looking for an alternative workout rather than just going to the gym [or] running. My mom suggested that I try out Flywheel because it is a customized workout…. I was looking to stay motivated while performing a workout that I actually enjoy doing,” said Miller.

Flywheel is not a typical workout experience; the class is personalized for each individual rider. Said Miller, “What makes Flywheel so unique is that it is all up to you. You decide what levels are best for you, and you control the technology on your bike.”

Specific stationary bikes can be reserved, which can then be adjusted when riders arrive to class for optimal comfort, according to flywheelsports.com.

Flywheel is not just physical exercise. The stationary bike exercise class “challenges your body and relaxes your mind,” according to flywheelsports.com.

Said Miller, “Flywheel transforms your body and your attitude with every ride.”

Though riders are competing against themselves, they have the option to utilize Flywheel’s “Torqboards,” which compare their ride to those of other people in the room, according to flywheelsports.com. This creates some healthy competition and essentially turns the 45-minute class into a race. Miller noted how her friends often underrated the class before trying it out, “Some of the friends that I brought to Flywheel said that it was the most difficult workout that they have ever experienced, but also the most rewarding.”

Said senior Dana Seigelstein after completing her first class: “I definitely underestimated Flywheel… Once I tried it, I could not believe how difficult and rewarding it was. If anyone—boy, girl, freshman, senior—is looking for a fun way to challenge themselves, Flywheel is the place to go.”

First-time riders at Flywheel take their first class free. After that, it costs $15 for students, and $32 for adults.
