Renwick’s new council

by Matt Gates
WHS has created a new Principal’s Council to address issues in the school community.
Said Principal Mr. Peter Renwick, “Principal’s Council is a forum for teachers and me to come together to discuss important issues related to the school and to develop appropriate action plans to address those identified issues.”

The Principal’s Council is a new step to improve the school community following the creation of the Student Balance Committee, which involved students, teachers and administrators discussing stress and well-being.

According to Social Studies Teacher and former Student Balance Committee member Ms. Tara Pignoli, the Student Balance Committee “discussed the idea of looking at the impact of weighted GPA on students’ course selection and overall wellness.”

Pignoli says that one major success of the Student Balance Committee last year was to survey the student body and create a quiet lunch study space in the library multipurpose room for students to study while eating.

Said Pignoli: “We also developed a Homework Pledge for teachers, students and parents to make a commitment to promoting a balanced lifestyle. ”

“I became involved with the Balance Committee because, as a school nurse I am very concerned about students who are suffering stress related illnesses such as tension headaches, GI problems, and the effects of disturbed sleep patterns,” said Nurse and Committee Member Ms. Carole Stavistki.

According to sophomore and former Student Balance Committee member Corinne Peterson, the homework pledge urges teachers not to assign short-term homework over school breaks.

Said Special Services Teacher Ms. Paulette Del Rosso: “The Principal’s Council has a much broader focus [than the Student Balance Committee] that encompasses eliciting ideas from the school community, input on larger issues that affect the direction and management of the high school and to maintain regular communication with the school community … Both the Student Balance Committee and Principal’s Council  are aimed to guide WHS to be the best it can be for students, families and staff.”
