After a tough loss to Cranford last Thursday, WHS recorded a win Friday as the girls squared off against rivals SPF, in what was a dominantly offensive game.
After a tough loss to Cranford last Thursday, WHS recorded a win Friday as the girls squared off against rivals SPF, in what was a dominantly offensive game.

With a final score of 15-10, the Blue Devils’ bats were active, especially for sophomore Cali Chambliss, who hit home runs in the first and second innings, senior Co-Captain Audrey Peterson, who went 4-5 and sophomore Chrissy Ferraro, who contributed key hits, including a home run in the fourth inning.

To start the game, SPF drilled a triple to left field; however, Westfield was not shaken by this strong start. WHS returned to pick the runner off at third, catch a fly ball and strike out the last batter, making quick work of the inning. At the plate, lead-off hitter and shortstop Chambliss sent the second pitch flying deep into left field for her first of two home runs.

The second inning saw similar scenarios as WHS got three up and three down in the top of the inning, and capitalized on SPF’s fielding errors to score five runs in the bottom of the inning.

Things appeared to take a turn for the worse during the top of the fourth inning, as the dry field proved to be an enemy for the Blue Devils’ defense. A combination of strong hits, fielding errors and unlucky hops allowed SPF to score seven runs.

Said Coach Ms. Caitlin Macdonald: “SPF did a really good job of hitting the ball hard and putting it in play, and they found us on our heels a lot. We were not sharp enough defensively.”

Said senior Co-Captain Olivia Pecora: “This was supposed to be a bounce-back because we didn’t play well against Cranford. Although we came away with a win, it didn’t feel like a win because we didn’t play our best.”

The bottom of the fourth inning saw WHS looking to retaliate. Sophomore Shannon Schaefer broke open the inning with a line drive up the middle, and Ferraro followed with a home run to centerfield. Peterson and junior Sarah Seitz continued the rally with singles, and a sacrifice by junior Aditi Jain allowed junior Natalie Tupper and sophomore Elena Scarano to drive in runs, closing the inning with a 10-8 lead.

In the following innings, WHS continued to dominate offensively, tacking on another five runs to make the final score 15-10.
