Teachers recall first Star Wars experiences

By Alex Campbell

Whether it was in June of 1977 or sometime afterward, these teachers reflect on their first encounter with Star Wars.

Mr. Chris Tafelski
“For a little kid, it’s such imagination. You’ve got heroes and you’ve got villains, and you’ve got not just two sides, but you have three sides, it’s more complicated than just having good guys and bad guys, you have in- between guys.”

Mr. Martin Maruschak
“I was a little kid who just saw magic in cool and different landscapes and weird-looking characters. All the adventure that a young boy could want wrapped up in awesome special effects.”

Mr. Roy Chambers
“It was something larger than life, literally out of this world. The characters were exciting, the special effects were incredible. It was an experience that you didn’t get that often.”

Mr. Daniel Farabaugh
“I remember being overwhelmed from the first moment, because there was nothing like it on that scale before.”

Ms. Bailey Verdone
“The way they are shot is amazing, and the jump into hyperspace was really interesting. That’s innovative cinema. There was nothing else on TV that looked like that.”
