Volleyball spikes again

by Jessica Koenigsberg

The varsity volleyball team dominated Linden with a stellar performance in the UCIAC quarterfinal Oct. 23, winning both sets with a score of 25–14, 25–12.
Westfield started strong with a quick eight-point lead, fueled by senior Tri-Captain Megan Mondon. The collaboration of sophomore Lizzie Sotung and Mondon helped the team hold the serve for 10 points, putting Westfield ahead in the first game.“They worked very well together in order to keep the gameplay going,” said Coach Beverly Torok.

The second set began with an ace from Mondon and quick points to put Westfield ahead 3–1. Senior Tri-Captain Olivia Manning then spiked the ball, one of her 10 kills in the game.

Said Manning: “We were able to keep possession of the ball by serving consistently to the spots on the other side of the net where their defense was not as strong.”

With the offense dominating, junior Rachel Mattessich protected the girls’ lead with a dig. Sets from Mondon, a tap from freshman Stephanie Borr and a spike from sophomore Olivia Meyer brought the score to 10–5.

A crosscourt spike by Borr started Westfield on another scoring streak, bringing the lead to 17–10. Mondon secured the win for the Blue Devils with a dig to silence the Tigers.

Said Torok: “Westfield’s strengths were our varied attacks and our defensive play…. The team members from last year or from the last two years understand that there is unfinished business.”

They play in the UCIAC semi-finals today at Kean University at 7 p.m.
