In their previous match against Linden, the Blue Devils struggled but came out with a close win of 34–31. But this time, Westfield was able to widen the gap, gaining help from strong play by all seniors wrestling their last home match.
Said senior Tri-Captain John Fuller, “Even though [Linden’s wrestlers] are better on paper… today we came out and wrestled… harder and better than them.”
In the first match, with multiple takedowns and quick plays was senior Tri-Captain Nick Kalimtzis, resulting in the first win of the meet. Strong back-to-back wrestling by Blue Devil brothers senior Kevin Miller and sophomore Jack Miller followed. Jack Miller won his match while Kevin Miller lost.
In the fourth match, despite a slow start in the first period, senior Tri-Captain Jarek Gozdieski, was able to build up a lead with few seconds remaining in the second period, and ultimately pinned his opponent and took the win.
Junior Devin Anderson and senior Cotter Spurlock both came out quick in the second period of their respective matches, allowing each player to pin his opponent and win his match.
Anchoring the team, Fuller came out strong with a 2 point lead in the first 20 seconds. Close to pinning his Linden opponent at the end of the first period, Fuller ran out of time, allowing him to rack on the points in the second period and ultimately pin his player.
Coach Glen Kurz said of the team’s performance: “Tonight’s win is the result of a lot of hard work…. I didn’t think that the kids wrestled particularly well tonight as a team… but they earned it throughout the season.”
The wrestling team fought hard for a win of 42–21 over Linden last Tuesday at its final home meet of the season.
