Throughout the 2012 election season, the WHS Young Democrats and Young Republicans clubs were involved in the political process.
This year, the Young Democrats sold buttons and other merchandise to raise funds for the Obama campaign and met with Democratic New Jersey House of Representatives Candidate Upendra Chivukula. They also participated in the Get Out the Vote Initiative on election day despite the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
According to Young Democrats Executive Board Officer Reece Zakarin, Get Out the Vote is an event that occurs every year on Election Day in which club members ring the doorbells of registered Democratic voters and remind them to vote.
Said Young Democrats Club Adviser Ms. Karen Stark: “[Young Democrats members] realize that you don’t have to have the right to vote to be able to have an impact.”
Meanwhile, the Young Republicans Club was re-founded this school year.
Said Club Co-founder Cassie Masciale: “We have had issues finding a sponsor which allowed for the club to fall out of practice, but this year with the election season, we [got] the club up and running again so that kids who know they are Republican or may be Republican [could] have an outlet to express their opinions.”
The new adviser for the Young Republicans Club is Mr. Valentino Scipioni.
“In years past, [Young Republicans Club members] have gotten off of school to help re-elect Mayor Andy Skibitsky and we have done literature drops, phone banks and campaigned for various representatives,” said Masciale.
Said Co-founder Patrick Currie: “Our biggest goal is going to be discussing how the Republican Party needs to adapt in order to compete in American politics today with a new younger generation.”
