Folio celebrated the release of its annual literary magazine on Friday with a coffeehouse barbecue held in the Project ‘79 courtyard. This was the culminating event of the 2013-2014 Folio season.

Folio is a student-run publication with a staff that selects prose, poetry, art and photography from the school community to display the talents of individuals. All students are eligible to submit their work to Folio, according to whsfolio.com.

According to senior and Folio staffer Noor El-Sherbeini, the staff decides which pieces of writing would be published by undergoing a thorough process of analysis and debate. Before reviewing all work, names are removed from the submitted pieces to ensure anonymity.

Said El-Sherbeini, “The best pieces we get are the ones which lead us into lengthy conversations about our interpretations of the content, rather than our opinions on whether or not the submission is well done.”

According to Adviser Mr. Peter Horn, Folio is an outlet for student voices to be heard.

In addition to the magazine, Folio organizes coffeehouses that are typically held once a month on Friday nights. While the magazine focuses solely on poetry, prose and photography, the coffeehouse offers other opportunities for students to expresses themselves, through storytelling, rap, song and more, according to junior Andrew Kuznetsov.

Coffeehouses were held in Cafeteria B or Room 166 at 6:30 p.m. and admission was $5, which went to support the magazine.

“Folio is just awesome all around…. Every time you go, there is always something new and entertaining there,” said sophomore attendee Maddie Kevelson.

Students looking to become more involved in the club next year can join the Folio staff by submitting an application. The application requires two critiqued pieces of literature from the previous year’s Folio magazine and additional questions, according to junior and Folio staffer Michael Poyntz.

Said Kuznetsov, “Without Folio, our student body’s artistic tendencies or interests would have no exposure, and we as a whole would be missing out on our own creative potential.”

Magazines were distributed at Friday’s coffeehouse.
