Girls tennis advances in NJSIAA tourney

By Annie Resnikoff

The girls varsity tennis team soared through the first round of the NJSIAA tournament with a strong 5–0 victory against Elizabeth last Thursday. Played at Tamaques Park, the match did not last long as the WHS girls all won in straight sets.

“The team has been having a great season so far,” said Coach Matt Varhley. “They play hard and try to do their best every day.”

Junior Tri-Captain Becca Sisto wrapped up her match 6–1, 6–1, while the other four teams of players ended their respective matches 6–0, 6–0.

According to senior Tri-Captain Catherine Massa, “This was a great match to start the tournament off with, because it really prepared us for the next round, and hopefully, rounds to come after that.”

The first doubles team of juniors Carolina Sanchez and Julia Morgan had a shaky start. According to Sanchez, after a couple of hesitant shots, they refocused and went on to win their match with relative ease.

Junior Tri-Captain Madeline Levy said the team played really well. She added, “I think overall we need to work on mentality and going into the matches with a better attitude.”

The team advanced into the next round of the NJSIAA tournament against North Hunterdon on Oct. 7, and won 3–2. They will be playing in the sectional semifinals today.
