Mural, mural on the wall

by Lauren Koenigsberg & Annie Tanella

Currently decorated with comedy and tragedy masks, the auditorium doors will soon be home to a new design as a result of Art Teacher Mr. Roy Chambers’ mural design contest, open to submissions from all students through April 30.

According to Chambers, the idea to hold the contest was established by Principal Mr. Peter Renwick and junior Alex Palatucci. Said Chambers, “I took the ideas that Alexandra had and came up with the format and guidelines for the contest.”

Students have the opportunity to submit their designs to Chambers in color, and if a design is selected, that artist will be provided with paints and materials to create a mural on the auditorium doors before the end of the school year.

Said Chambers, “I’m looking forward to seeing how students will approach the challenge, and what themes will be dominant in each mural design.”

Submissions for the mural, all related to theater, drama or music, allow student artists to use their creativity and artistic abilities to create a piece that will be a part of the school community for years. “I am hoping for a well-composed design that will stand the test of time for years to come,” said Chambers.

Art II student sophomore Rita Murphy is currently crafting her own design to submit. “I am trying to incorporate theatre and music into it to address the major activities that happen in the auditorium,” she said.

Design entries can be submitted to Chambers in Room 231 or electronically to [email protected]. “I will be working with [Drama Teacher Mr. Daniel] Devlin and Mr. Renwick to assess the theme, composition and plan to complete the mural by the end of the school year,” said Chambers.

Said Palatucci: “I really hope that the design chosen reflects our school’s amazing theatre program while keeping influences from the original design. “I value tradition and think it’s important to remember our roots while we make changes to the school.”
