Students turn back time: Making the move to vinyl

By Julia Ross

It’s time to “turn” back time and listen to music with a groovy new spin.

Vinyl album sales have reached a “record” growth of 260 percent since 2009, according to billboard.com. But why? Perhaps this is because we have never experienced the sound of a record. Is it more satisfying to place a needle on vinyl instead of pressing a button on a screen

It’s time to “turn” back time and listen to music with a groovy new spin.
WHS senior Ethan Smith said it is. “You can see where the music is coming from and it’s way cooler to listen to than just plugging your phone into a speaker,” Smith said.

Ms. Susan Grimm from Scotti’s Record Shop in Summit said records are like a new frontier to teenagers. “Teens have grown up with no physical format to listen to—it’s all downloading and streaming,” Grimm said. Music from record players, she said, “is cooler and sounds better.”

Grimm said there is more of a selection when choosing albums. Senior Grace Pfeifer agreed, noting how cool it is to discover new artists on records. “It’s almost more exciting to find a record of a singer that you’ve never heard of, because it’s fun discovering whether you’ll like the artist or not,” she said.

Like Pfeifer, senior Jack Manning has inherited many of his records from family members. “My parents gave me all their old records…when I get an old record that I’ve never heard before, I’ll usually play [it] through a couple of times,” Manning said.

As record sales increase, popular stores have begun to sell vinyls and record players as well. According to forbes.com, vintage stores only account for 65 percent of record sales; another portion of sales come from chain realtors. Urban Outfitters carries various popular albums in vinyl form along with actual record players (because what’s a record without something to play it on?)

Websites like vinyl-pressing.com will create vinyl records from your own selected music. The site advertises all the ways that one can transfer music from a CD, MP3 or tape to create your own customized record. The more records sold brings out the inner hipster in all of us and gives us a new experience when listening to music…well, new to our generation.
