Twilight takes the limelight

by Erin Fitzpatrick

For many “Twihards,” Breaking Dawn Part 2 brought together a thrilling plot with shocking and pleasant surprises, despite the unrealistic special effects.

The fifth and final Twilight  film continued the story of the romance between vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) and the human-turned-vampire Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), who had a half human, half vampire baby, Renesmee (Mackenzie Foy).

In the second installment, the cruel vampire leaders, the Volturi, came to fight the Cullens because they were believed to have broken the vampire law. In order to save themselves, the Cullens needed to convince the Volturi that Renesmee was not dangerous.

The characters introduced throughout the films risked their lives to convince the Volturi that Renesmee would not reveal their secret. This risk made the plot interesting and created an intriguing rollercoaster of ups and downs without knowing what to expect.

There are points in the film where the actors succeeded in sharing their nervousness and uncertainty with the audience.

The ending differed from that of the book, which was a surprise to “Twihards,” but kept the movie unpredictable without changing too much of the plot.

Overall, the film succeeded with establishing a vampire “image” which included red eyes, pale skin and a shimmer in the sun.  At other times, however, the special effects were very unrealistic, such as when they had super strength and super speed. For example, when Bella knocks off part of a huge rock with her hands, or when the computer-generated baby Renesmee moves robotically.

Furthermore, the costumes and makeup of the movie were very well done, between the body painting of the vampires from the Amazon, shirtless werewolves (including Taylor Lautner) and the black capes of the Volturi.

In the end, the final movie circled back to what was most important to this saga: the romance between Edward and Bella. Their relationship was the reason for all of the tension in the first place, and it was important for the audience to feel their connection in this movie, as well.

The details of the film may  not have been perfect, but the overall aura that the viewers left with was positive, and the ending was bittersweet.
