Gymnastics soars

by Natalie Brennan

The gymnastics team tumbled its way to the top in every event at last Thursday’s home meet against Union.

Its victory was marked by their sportsmanship as they cheered on their teammates—and opponents—throughout the competition.

Sophomore Jess Keenan kicked off the competition on vault with a score of 8.950, capturing first place.

Things continued to heat up as sophomore Carlie Fasano snagged first place on bars with a score of 8.125, qualifying her for sectionals.

Said Fasano: “We all pulled ourselves together and did our routines very well. I was very happy with my performance. I had been practicing my full dismount off of bars for a while [which] went very well, so I’m very happy with how I did.”

Westfield’s winning streak did not stop there. Junior Hannah Goldring’s exemplary performance on balance beam clinched the team the winning spot. Goldring’s 9.350 score was followed by Fasano’s score of 8.900.

Said Goldring: “On Thursday, we went out prepared for a good meet. Almost all of us hit our routines, and we were proud of how we did.”

Senior Tri-Captain Abby Cook finished off the meet with a winning floor routine. Cook took first place with a score of 9.325. Goldring came in second with a score of 9.125. Senior Tri-Captain Morgan McAllister placed third in the event with a score of 8.750.

Said Cook: “A lot of different girls stepped up and contributed. I’m looking forward to counties.” Added Head Coach Melissa Greenwald: “My girls continue to work hard. They’re motivated to win and we keep working towards our goal of conquering counties and winning our sectional title back.”

Counties will be held on Oct. 18 in Westfield as the team looks to defend its county title, one it has held since 2006.
