Lunch ladies

by Olivia Loggia

Beyond the fact that you buy your bagel from them, they make your salad every day, or they smile at you in the cafeteria, how much do you really know about the ladies working in WHS’s cafeteria? Here’s a snapshot of the lives of a few of the ladies who make WHS so unique.

Jeanne Genova: at WHS for 15 years

“I was a high school twirler for David Brearley High School in Kenilworth. When I was in grammar school I did take twirling, and then I decided to go out for it again in high school because I thought it would be a lot of fun going to all the football games.”

Maria Steins: at WHS since September

“I really love to cook and bake; I especially like to bake Christmas cookies. But if I had an extra hour in the day I would spend it reading. I like to read lots of love stories, you know like Danielle Steel. But I’ll read anything and everything–if it’s a good book, I will read it.”

Barbara Dubhorn: at WHS for five years

“I’m a new grandma this year. My granddaughter’s three months old, her name’s Morgan Rose. So I’m all excited about that, this is going to be our first Christmas with my granddaughter at the house. I sing to her at night, and I read to her at night. I have other grandchildren, everything from newborn up to 21, and I love it.”

Barbara Thompson: at WHS for eight years

“I used to sew Halloween costumes for my children. They’re all grown up, but I do it for my grandchildren now. When my daughter was in second grade, she was Betsy Ross. I took the American flag and folded it all up and put an embroidery ring around it, and she carried the American flag around with her. And I did Chewbacca for my son.”
