The WHS field hockey team continued its impressive season with a 7-0 shutout at Mount St. Dominic’s Oct. 7, improving its record to 6-3. Junior Halsey Urban, sophomore Emily Mastrocola, junior McKenna Wilson, senior Meghan Murphy and senior Geena Gao all scored goals for WHS.

After six minutes of playing time, WHS was up 2-0 with goals off of corners by Mastrocola and Gao.

Senior Quad-Captain Kelly Gray cleared the ball on MSD’s next possession. Wilson gained possession and her blocked shot was deflected into the net by Gao. After a brief MSD possession, senior Quad-Captain Meg Anderson regained control of the ball. Anderson centered the ball, a shot by Urban was rebounded out and Wilson scored the goal. WHS was up 4-0.

After a foul by MSD, Urban found herself in scoring position, and after one blocked shot, she recovered the ball to score off her rebound.

Mastrocola said, “There was only one corner due to strong defense by [senior Quad-Captain] Olivia Pecora, Gray, [senior] Emily Fahey, and [senior] Katie DeMasi.” The MSD corner was cleared by Gray and junior Lauren Anzevino. At the half, WHS was winning 5-0.

The second half started with a WHS corner which was deflected into the goal by Murphy. After defensive clears by Pecora and DeMasi, WHS gained possession and a shot was deflected out of bounds by an MSD player,  giving WHS a corner. Senior Quad-Captain Alie Spera centered the corner and Anderson’s shot was deflected wide but Murphy tapped it in for another goal.

Said Coach Caitlin MacDonald: “Overall, our offense was able to keep possession. They were able to make passes to open space and unmarked teammates.”

With the score 7-0, the rest of the game had a defensive focus for WHS. The next MSD possession was cleared, even after they regained possession, Pecora cleared it again. Pecora’s clear was deflected to MSD, allowing the MSD offense to sneak behind the WHS defense on a breakaway. WHS recovered in time to force a bad shot out of bounds giving WHS possession.

After a foul by Anzevino, WHS regained possession off of a save by junior goalie Deanna Cohen. Another change in possession led to a clear by Spera who passed to Fahey. The game ended with Murphy in control of the ball.

Said MacDonald: “There is a lot of solid competition in our county. We are hoping for a four seed.” Field hockey’s next game will be the first round of the County tournament, Oct. 15 at Kent Place.
