Rivals come together

by Kaylee Baez

Rivals WHS and SPF are coming together as a community to help families in need by doing what they do best: competing against each other. Fans from both schools will gather at Kehler Stadium to support their teachers participating in the 50/50 Charity Softball Game on June 7.

According to Physical Education Teacher Mr. Ralph Corey, the driving forces behind the event are WHS’ Helping Hands, SPF’s Caring for the Needy and Corey himself. Corey added that all proceeds from the game will go directly to families in both towns that are struggling financially due to severe health related issues.

Corey admits that his idea for the event came directly from his observations here at WHS. “I was impressed how the students…came together during superstorm Sandy to help raise money, food and other items for those less fortunate. This unbelievable contribution of the students showed me how the Westfield community goes above and beyond for those less fortunate.”

By including SPF, both schools continue their rivalry but this time for something more than just pride. Corey hopes to make this fundraiser an annual event in order to provide opportunities to residents to help others in their towns. Said Corey, “I wanted to return the favor and help raise money for someone locally that we may not be aware of who is struggling to survive both physically and financially.”

WHS staff members like Corey and even Principal Mr. Peter Renwick will bring their game faces to the field in order to win for this heartwarming cause. Said English Teacher Mr. Darren Finkel: “Any opportunity to participate in a charitable cause and give back to a community is a worthy event to take part in.”
